Compromise of 1877
During which Rutherford B. Hayes of Ohio (Republican) ran against Samuel J. Tilden (Democrat), governor of New York. It seemed like Tilden would win, as he clearly won the popular vote and would likely win in the electoral college, as well. For months, the results of the election were undecided, causing the United States to be in a serious political crisis. To resolve the situation, Congress appointed 7 Democrats, 7 Republicans, and one independent members to a special electoral commission to receive the votes of the conflict estates. Though when the independent candidate resigned to run for Senate, he was replaced by a Republican, giving Republicans control over the matter. To ensure that Hayes won, Republicans spoke with Democrat candidates and reached what would come to be know as the Compromise of 1877: that Hayes would become president and southern blacks would be abandoned to their fate.
