Tenure of Office Act
One of the laws passed by Congress designed to restrict the president's authority over the Reconstruction issues. The Tenure of Office Act required the Senate's approval for the removal of cabinet members and other officials whose appointment had needed the consent of the Senate. On February 24, 1868, the House voted to impeach president Johnson for apparently violating the Tenure of Office Act and he was then placed on trial before the Senate.
