In the election of 1860, the candidates were: Abraham Lincoln of the Republican party (with 180 electoral votes and 1,865,593 popular votes); John C. Breckinridge of the Southern Democrats (with 72 electoral votes and 848,356 popular votes); Stephen A. Douglas of the Northern Democrats (with 1,382,713 popular votes); and John Bell of the Constitutional Union (with 39 electoral votes and 592,906 popular votes). Lincoln won over Douglas by 482,880 popular votes.
