Sherman then marched invincibly through Georgia to the sea, living on nothing but what he found in the wilderness, as he had no connection to anyone or anything. Along the way, he destroyed anything and everything, leaving a path of destruction 300 miles long, and 60 miles wide.

Sherman's March
General William Tecumseh Sherman led one of the most forceful Union movements towards Atlanta and the heart of Georgia. His invasion of said state went extremely well and between May and September, he executed a series of skillfully planned movements that sent the Confederates packing to the edge of Atlanta. On September 2, the city was conquered, allowing Union forces to take over the central hub of the South. (—> this led to improved chances that Lincoln would win the election in November against McClellan. And he did, with: 55% popular votes, and 212 out of the 233 electoral votes.
