Pierre G. T. Beauregard AND Jefferson Davis

Born Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard on May 28, 1818, in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, Pierre G. T. Beauregard was one of the two best generals of the South (the other was Joseph E. Johnston). He suffered greatly under the leadership of ineffective war leader, Jefferson Davis, who ordered the directions his troops were to proceed in literally and personally and left the control of the civilian population to the Confederate Congress. Also, he lacked the ability to handle and work with field commanders who were just as proud and touchy as he was. Bauregard and Johnston were commands that they deserved because they too refused to get along with Davis. This favoritism was so deep that he allowed another general, Braxton E. Bragg, to keep a major command even after he proved himself to be extremely incompetent.
