Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau was a temporary agency that had been founded for the purpose of helping former slaves get back into the swing of "ordinary life" by providing them with education, help with obtaining land and/or employment, legal help, and general relief. The extension of the life of this agency was to be extended, as written in one of the two bills passed with overwhelming Republican support, but unfortunately, president Johnson vetoed it in early 1866, causing a disagreement between Congress and the president.
