Civil War Medicine

During the Civil War, the development of new medicines and practices helped save the lives of many soldiers injured in the field.
-Medicines: such as the discovery of bromine led to better hygiene habits by the soldiers to decrease the extremely high number of amputations that were performed. When traveling and fighting, the soldiers took really bad care of themselves leading to more deaths by infections than in action on the battlefield.
-Nurses: it was also during this period that women were able to volunteer to leave and take care of the soldiers on and off the field. Women now had the opportunity to help the war effort, though they were still unable to fight out on the battlefield.
